Academic Support

Academic Enrichment Center

Message from the Academic Enrichment Center:

During this difficult and unprecedented time, the AEC staff will continue to offer academic support for certain general education courses and subjects. We would ask that you be open to flexibility and creativity in the delivery of these services and remember that remote tutoring will be different from face-to-face tutoring. The AEC tutors will be online to help you Monday-Thursday from 8:00 AM-10:00 PM, Friday 8:00 AM-5:00 PM, and Sunday 6:00 PM-10:00 PM. We will be posting separate schedules for writing tutors and math tutors on the AEC website (go to the McMurry homepage, click on Academics, and the Academic Enrichment Center is the third item in the drop-down). Please refer to these schedules to check time availability in specific subjects. Keep in mind that we will have one to possibly two tutors available at a time, so please be patient.

We will continue to offer tutoring in Math (Introductory Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Calculus I, Calculus II, and Statistics) and Writing online via Microsoft Teams. Tutoring for Chemistry I and II will move under Supplemental Instruction as those classes will already be populated in MS Teams. The SI instructors will provide both supplemental instruction and basic tutoring for those students. As an additional support option, students may want to utilize the STEM Students Resources link located on the AEC web page.

To access the tutors, students will need to use the link titled Online Spring 2020 Tutoring Access, provided on the AEC web page academics.mcm.edu/aec, to go to the general tutoring MS Team page and request a tutorial. Students need to specify the subject they need help in, for example, Calculus I, Pre-Cal, English 1320 paper, sociology paper, etc. This information will help the tutors know which one needs to respond to the request. (Please note that only certain math tutors are qualified to help with the various calculus courses as well as statistics, so availability will be more limited for those subjects.) The tutors will then use the Chat option to engage the student seeking help. MS Teams will allow students to share a screen shot of their problem and/or work and also upload a writing assignment to the chat.

Should you have questions about tutoring, please contact Sharon West at west.sharon@mcm.edu. Your health and safety is of utmost concern, and we look forward to helping you as we make this transition together.

Sincerely,

The AEC staff

Accept this challenge as an opportunity for academic growth, not as an obstacle to your academic success this semester.

Help yourself face new academic challenges this semester by developing a plan of action and seeking support.

  • Designate and set up a quiet place to study. Make sure this area has all of the supplies you need and the technology required to participate online.
  • Get organized. Use a paper or electronic calendar to help you organize and prioritize your academic responsibilities.
  • Prepare for and “attend” class sessions just as you would if you were on campus. Continue to keep your regular semester schedule for attending, preparing for and completing class assignments. (If you are at home with your family, ask them to support you by giving you quiet time to complete your course requirements.)
  • Take notes as if you were attending in person and participate in any online discussion.
  • Actively check your McMurry email and/or Moodle daily. Contact your instructor if you need assistance in their course. Take advantage of any online office hours they provide to ask questions.
  • Keep a positive and productive mindset
  • Contact the Mindset for Success Office if you need any further assistance.

Hold yourself accountable and be open to new academic experiences by developing a productive academic mindset.

  • Establish reasonable academic goals and take steps to work toward them.
  • Manage your time so you are maximizing your opportunity to be successful .
  • Stay positive. Keep focused on your goal of graduating with a college degree.
  • Make Connections by building new relationships with your advisors, instructors, classmates, and academic resources.

Practice self-care in all aspects of life. (physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally, etc.)
