The Department of Music is a dynamic and active department on the campus of McMurry University. It offers numerous and varied opportunities for performance, as well as many opportunities to develop one’s musical talent through applied lessons and classes.

Ensembles have performed successfully at competitions and festivals on state, national and international stages and more than 90 percent of our graduates find jobs in the music field or attend graduate school. Our experienced faculty is dedicated to the success of our students in the teaching or performance areas. Students have ample opportunities to perfect their craft with freedom to explore their artistic side. Scholarships are available to music majors, minors and non-majors.

The Minor in Music can be combined with many of McMurry's other majors and degree programs. In addition, post-baccalaureate students can earn teacher certification through course work offered by the Music Department.

Department Honors and Awards

Kappa Kappa Psi is a co-educational band service fraternity open to active members of the McMurry University Bands with a cumulative GPA of 2.0. The organization exists to provide leadership, musicianship, and support to the university band program. Regular attendance of meetings is required in addition to service and fundraising activities. New members are able to join each year after one semester of participating in meetings, membership education, and service projects.

Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) and Texas Music Educators Conference (TMEC) Collegiate Student Chapter. These organizations are directly associated with MENC (Music Educators National Conference). The organization offers music students opportunities to enhance their understanding of all aspects of music education—general, choral and instrumental.

Performance Opportunities

The Music Department provides a number of performance opportunities for all students attending McMurry University. As a general rule, membership in any performing ensemble is gained through audition with the particular instructor directing the ensemble.


The University Bands sponsor the McMurry Marching Band each fall, a year-round Wind Ensemble, a spring-semester Symphonic Band and a summer high-school band camp. Membership in all bands is open to both music majors and non-majors

McMurry Chanters

Chanters is the primary touring choir of the music department. They are selected by competitive audition, and the ensemble performs a wide variety of music.

Trumpet Ensemble

The McMurry University Trumpet Ensemble performs regularly on campus, in the Abilene area, throughout Texas, and nationally. The group regularly premieres new works for trumpet ensemble and also performs standard works in all genres.

Percussion Ensembles

Performing a wide range of literature and styles, in small chamber groups to large percussion orchestras, this ensemble provides opportunities for students to learn advanced chamber performance skills, percussion ensemble repertoire, extended techniques.


Beyond McMurry

While at McMurry all of our music students have a strong curriculum to prepare them for a wide variety of experiences including graduate studies and professional careers.
