The University Bands

BandThe University Bands have been an integral part of student life at McMurry University throughout its entire history. Active since 1946, when reorganized by legendary director Raymond T. "Prof" Bynum, the McMurry Bands have provided a musical outlet for students from across campus. Additionally, they have contributed outstanding musical performances for events on campus, in the Abilene community, and its surrounding areas. Housed in the beautifully renovated Bynum Band Hall, the University Bands sponsor the McMurry Marching Band each fall, a year-round Wind Ensemble, a spring-semester Symphonic Band and a summer high-school band camp. Membership in all bands is open to both music majors and non-majors, with band scholarships available to all students enrolled in its ensembles. The University Bands travel extensively, as well. In addition to the Wind Ensemble’s annual tour of Texas and New Mexico and numerous Abilene-area Marching Band exhibitions, the Wind Ensemble was recently the only U.S. band invited to perform at the World Conference of the International Society for Music Education in Bologna, Italy, while the McMurry Marching Band was recently featured in exhibition at the 3A Texas State Marching Finals in San Antonio, Texas.
