The Dark at the Top of the Stairs

The McMurry Department of Theatre presents The Dark at the Top of the Stairs written by William Inge and directed by Charlie Hukill, professor of theatre, from November 9-11 and 16-18 in the Ryan Fine Arts Center’s Little Theatre. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. for all shows.

The cast of The Dark at the Top of the Stairs features McMurry theatre students junior Lauren Bridwell as Cora Flood, senior Graeme Regan as Rubin Flood, freshman Hailey Rodgers as Reenie Flood, freshman Shawna Johnson as Flirt Conroy, freshman Blair Stewart as Morris Lacey, freshman Holleigh Owens as Lottie Lacey, freshman Aaron Armendarez as Sammy Glodenbaurm and sophomore Kevin Roberts as Punky Givens. Gabe Pyenta , son of Dr. Paul Pyenta, associate professor of biochemistry, will play the role of Sonny Flood.

The Dark at the Top of the Stairs is set in a small Oklahoma town during the early 1920s, in the home of the Flood family. The plot consists of a series of short stories, all of them dealing with people wrestling with their deepest fears, and running the gamut from the fears that create tension and distance in marriage to the fears of children and teenagers plagued by insecurity, loneliness and alienation. There is dark at the top of everyone’s stairs, but the play ultimately demonstrates that this darkness can only be dissipated by understanding, tolerance and compassion.

Tickets are $10 general admission and $8 for McMurry faculty, staff and students, all tickets are reduced by $3 on Thursday nights. For more information or to purchase tickets, please call the McMurry Theatre Box Office at 325-793-3889
