Department of Theatre

The biggest advantages to attending McMurry University as a Theatre major are the personal attention you will receive due to small class sizes, the multitude of opportunities that will be afforded you in production work, and the high level of experiential education offered.

During the academic year, we focus on the art of theatre, not overly concerning ourselves with the success of the box office. Certainly we want to sell tickets but our main goal is to provide a well rounded theatre education for our majors and minors, as well as the student body at large. Plays are selected to expose students to as wide a range of types and styles of theatre as is possible.

During the summer we generally shift to box office success. We select shows based on their ability to attract an audience and sometimes offer dinner theatre options.

Casting during the school year is open primarily to majors, minors and other students, with preference given to majors and minors. In the summer, auditions are open to the community and professional actors. Our goal in the summer is to educate our students on theatre as a business.

We also placed an emphasis on nurturing young playwrights and staging original scripts. The playwriting class is offered in the spring of odd years and three one-act plays from the writing projects of that class are staged the following spring, each directed by one of the faculty.

We have also staged three full-length student-written plays that were completed as Honors projects for senior Theatre students, and have had staged readings of four other student written full-length plays.

Department Honors and Awards

The McMurry University Honors Program includes two distinct tracks designed to enrich the academic experience of our most outstanding students. Every McMurry student with a 3.25 GPA is considered an honors student and encouraged to take honors courses. In order to graduate from the Honors Program.

To find out more visit the Honors Program Website or view the catalog at the Registrar's Website.

A number of McMurry playwrights have been recognized with awards at the annual Texas Educational Theatre Association’s Theatrefest. During one four year period, six of the eight awards given for playwriting at the college/university level were received by McMurry students. In all, 14 of our student playwrights have received awards from TETA Playfest. Plays are the life blood of the theatre and the encouragement of young writers will provide for the future of the artform.

Performance Opportunities

Departmental Productions. McMurry theatre production auditions are open to all McMurry students with casting preference given to majors and minors. There are at least three faculty directed productions during each academic year. In addition, two to four full-length plays are offered each year by advanced students as senior projects and a series of one-act plays are staged each Spring by the Directing I class.

Summer Theatre. The summer theatre program attempts to produce one to three plays each summer in either conventional or dinner theatre formats. Guest directors, designers, and actors are regularly employed to offer the students exposure to as many different approaches to solving the problems of staging a play as possible. BFA students are required to participate in at least one summer season.

Original Play Production. The department is dedicated to producing new plays written by McMurry students. Every other year, the department stages plays written by students of the Playwriting class of the previous year.

Out of a Trunk Theatre Company. The members of the company provide educational arts experiences in the public schools by presenting programs and conducting workshops throughout the school year.

Financial Aid

Students majoring or minoring in theatre may audition for theatre work positions. Auditions are held during student preview weekends and by appointment. There are also scholarships available for outstanding academics.
