2020 Categories

Category I - Trumpet Ensemble

  • Premiere to be performed by the McMurry University Trumpet Ensemble 
  • Maximum length of 5 minutes
  • May be continuous or multi-movement
  • 4 unique parts (quartet)
  • May use any combination of B-flat Trumpet, C Trumpet, and Flugelhorn
  • May use any combination of mutes
  • Please stay within standard range of chosen instruments (F#3 to C6)

Category II - Percussion Ensemble

  • Premiere to be performed by the McMurry University Percussion Ensemble
  • Maximum length of 5 minutes
  • May be continuous or multi-movement
  • 3-5 players
  • Standard concert percussion instruments preferred (Marimbas, Xylophone, Tom-toms, Vibraphone, Timpani, etc...)
  • Some 'found' instruments may be used (flower pots, metals, etc...), however no specific pitch requirements for these instruments
  • Mallet instruments available:
    • (2) 5-octave marimbas
    • (2) 3-octave Vibraphones
    • (1) 3.5-octave Xylophone
    • Chimes
    • (2) Glockenspiels
  • Use of multi-media (audio or visual) allowed. Audio/Video tracks must be submitted along with other required materials

Category III - Brass and Percussion Ensemble

  • Premiere to be performed by members of the McMurry Wind Ensemble
  • Maximum length of 5 minutes
  • May be continuous or multi-movement
  • 8-10 brass players, 5 maximum percussion players
    • 2-4 trumpets
    • 2 horns
    • 2 trombones
    • 1-2 tubas
  • Technical difficulties of the work should be no greater than standard grade 4 wind ensemble literature

Category IV - Trumpet/Percussion Duo

  • 2 selections will be chosen for performance
  • Premiere to be performed by MAD! (Dr. David Amlung, trumpet & Dr. Juan Mendoza, percussion)
  • Maximum length of 10 minutes
  • Must multi-movement composition written in fashion of miniatures or vignettes
  • Each movement of piece should be a singular combination of one trumpet & one percussion voice (Ex. Flugelhorn/Snare Drum, Bb Trumpet/Marimba, etc.)
  • Trumpet Specifications
    • May use Bb Trumpet, C, Trumpet, and Flugelhorn
    • May use any combination of mutes
    • Please stay within standard range of chosen instruments (F#3 to C6)
  • Percussion Specifications
    • May use any standard concert percussion instruments (Ex. Snare Drum, Marimba, Xylophone, Tomtoms, etc...)

2020 McMurry New Music Project Information

Deadline

All materials must be received via email by 12:00 AM on March 1, 2020. Entries are to include the following:

  • Full Score (PDF format)
  • Individual Parts (PDF format)
  • Sound File (MIDI preferred)
  • Composer Bio
  • Description of Composition

Please submit all materials to newmusic@mcm.edu. Confirmation of materials received will be sent within 72 hours of composer submission. Only complete submissions will be evaluated.

Description

The Music Department at McMurry University is dedicated to being on the forefront of musical innovation and supporting the development of new repertoire by established and emerging composers. The McMurry New Music Project seeks to engage the worldwide musical community in premiering new works and promoting projects to be added to the active repertoire. The McMurry New Music Project will actively promote the winning composers via the competition website and will include a link to the composer’s personal website. Utilization of social media resources will include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube with details about the winning submissions and professional quality recordings of winning works.
