Employers are looking for employees and managers who know how to think. They are looking for people who are technically savvy, recognize issues and solve problems, all of which are also important abilities for business leaders to have in this changing economic climate. You will consider global, social, legal and ethical issues, and acquire a skillset that is highly sought after. Your curiosity will help you make the connection between classroom discussions and practical application in real business situations.
The school offers courses leading to the Bachelor of Business Administration degree and the Bachelor of Science in Accounting degree. The candidate for the Bachelor of Business Administration degree may concentrate their work in one or more of the following areas:
Students may choose to complete a dual concentration in the Bachelor of Business Administration degree (B.B.A.). Courses completed for credit in one concentration may not be used for credit in a second concentration. The Bachelor of Science in Multidisciplinary Studies degree with teaching field in Business Education is also offered, in cooperation with the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.
In addition to the B.B.A. the student may choose an honors curriculum. Admission requires completion of 60 hours of college credit and of a GPA of at least 3.5 in ACCT 2310; ECON 2310, 2320; and BA 1310, with a GPA of 3.25 in all other college work. Students must complete seven hours of honors courses in business, including BA 4X96* (Honors Tutorial) and BA 4X97* (Honors Thesis). Departmental honors will be obtained in the student’s area of business concentration.
To enroll in the Internship Program the student must be in good academic standing with the university and have completed 60 hours toward their require completion of certain courses. It should be noted that individual employers may have their own explicit requirements such as minimum GPA which is above what is required by the university, specific course work completed, and/or a classification of senior
At McMurry University, the power is placed in the hands of our students. This concept is showcased in our unique Student Managed Investment Fund program. This distinguished curriculum consist of an elite number of students who manage a fund valued at $1,000,000.
The McMurry Board of Trustees allocated $1,000,000 from the university's endowment to fund portfolio of domestic equities, entirely assembled and managed by McMurry Business students. Once accepted into this two-semester sequence of senior-level finance classes, students will research stocks for purchase, make decisions for purchasing or selling stocks, and present their findings to their classmates.
There is no substitute for this type of valuable, "real-world" experience for students interested in portfolio and investment management and the financial services industry.
For a number of years McMurry has offered classes between semesters for students in London, England. A group of students and faculty, accompanied by various community members, travel to London for an immersive educational experience. They return prior to the start of the spring semester.
McMurry students can take two classes for a maximum of six hours credit. The business courses offered are International Management and International Marketing. A Religion course, Wesley in London, is offered, along with a History course, Roman London.
Business faculty arrange site visits to companies in the London area, and students conduct research on those companies prior to the trip. During the site visits, students and faculty meet with company representatives, who make presentations and answer questions from the students and faculty. Facility tours are often included in the site visits. Those site visits are the result of considerable planning and scheduling between Business faculty and company representatives.
McMurry Business students and faculty have made site visits to the following companies: Whole Foods Market, British Airways, Acorne, PLC, and Lloyd’s.
Business students also visit significant retail operations in London, in order to draw comparisons between those outlets and similar businesses in the United States. Students in Religion and History courses have separate course requirements to meet, such as exploring areas where the original Roman wall is still visible.
In addition to fulfilling required course activities, students have time to experience the historic and cultural opportunities presented by London. Students typically visit the Imperial War Museum (also the site of the British Holocaust Museum), the British Museum, the Museum of the City of London, the Tower of London, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and Westminster Abbey. Many students will attend services at Wesley’s Chapel in London and will see performances at London theaters.
The entire travel group made a day trip to Paris, France, on the Eurostar Chunnel train. During their brief time in Paris, the travelers enjoyed a guided motor coach tour of the city, with stops at the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre Museum, where they saw the Mona Lisa, the Winged Victory, Venus de Milo, and other treasures of the Louvre collection. The travel group also experienced a guided tour of the Palace of Westminster, which included the Houses of Parliament.
This trip provides students with an opportunity to see the application of their classroom lessons in an international context. Even though it is a brief experience, the impact of such a trip on our students should not be diminished. For many of our students, it is a life-changing opportunity.
One of McMurry’s missions are to enable excellence throughout the University community. Excellence can be seen in our team of Business Student Advocates. This group of business students are nominated by the business faculty on criteria such as: classroom performance, campus and community involvement, individual initiative, and the ability to function as a team member. They are presented with extra opportunities to network with the the Business Advisory Board, respected alumni, and prospective students.
The Business Shareholders is a club that was created by students in the School of Business. They host business events, like Business Luncheon Talk (BLT), bring guest speakers to campus, and provide information for future business careers. This organization is a great way for business students to network with alumni and have fun.
